Epworth Cookbook 1898

The Epworth League was and still is a Methodist young adult association.
Perth Amboy's Chapter was most likely associated with the Simpson Methodist Church
located on High Street.
The Perth Amboy Epworth cookbook came out in 1898.
The book is 70 pages long and is filled with recipes from names
that may sound familiar.
Mrs. Chas. Seguine, Mrs. G.D. Runyon, Mrs. E.Keasbey,
Mrs. J.G. Garrettson, Mrs. Booz, and Mrs.H.E. Pickersgill.
There are ads from stores or services that are no longer around.
Parisen's Pharmacy - Corner of Smith and High
Ed Seil, Dry Goods - 90 Smith St.
C.A. Clark Shoes - 98 Smith St.
J.B. Ford - Undertaker - 199 High St.
Quinns Tea Store - 93 Smith St.
While thumbing thru the book, I found a recipe for
Chili Sauce submitted by a friend.
Chili Sauce
12 ripe tomatoes
4 ripe peppers
2 onions
2 tablespoonfuls of salt
3 teacupfuls of vinegar (2 if very strong)
A little cinnamon, cloves and allspice.
Peel the tomatoes, chop fine. Also the peppers and onions.
Boil all together for 1 1/2 hours
Add 1 ounce of mustard seed, 2 large tablespoonfuls of brown sugar.

Wonder if it's better than the sauce used for Coney Island Hot Dogs?
More cookbooks from Perth Amboy to come.
