Perth Amboy Banks

Perth Amboy had it's share of banks.
Many of the banks we knew when growing up
are long gone.
One of the banks we wouldn't remember is
The Citizens Building and Loan.
(Everytime I see this name, it reminds me of
the movie "It's A Wonderful Life)
Citizens Building and Loan was located at
108 Smith St.
On the postcard it's on the right hand side with the sign.

The building is still there. On the building it says Roth Furniture.
Perth Amboy Savings Institution opened its doors in
1869.  At the time it was located in a rented room at
267 High St.  Fours years later the bank's first building was
located at the Corner of Smith and Rector Streets.
In 1917, the bank relocated to Smith and
Maple Streets.
It was renovated in 1968.

Perth Amboy Savings Institution is now Sovereign Bank

The Perth Amboy Trust Company
was located on Hobart and Smith Streets.
It added another level.
In the 1960's, AS Beck Shoe Store was located at that site.

All that is left to remind us that this was a bank at one
time is the sign on the Hobart St, side of the building.

First Savings and Loan Association
Located on State Street
If you ever banked at school with those gold colored envelopes
this is the bank where you had an account.
Changed to Provident Bank sometime in the late 90's or early
2000's
You couldn't miss this bank building.
Located on the Five Corners.
Building still looks the same.
It's now a Capital One bank.
The First National Bank was located
on the corner of Smith and Maple. Right across Maple St.
from the Perth Amboy Savings Institution.

The First National Bank was a Wachovia Bank which is now Wells Fargo.

The buildings are still there as a reminder of what they were in the
history of  Perth Amboy.

The Daily Graphic - 1875

The New York Daily Graphic did a story on Perth Amboy,NJ  on Friday, May 28th. 1875
Back in the day articles were thousands of words and very descriptive.
The Article speaks of Perth Amboy as a Summer Resort with rooms available at the
Packer Hotel or The Brighton.
Also the Article takes you back when Perth Amboy was known as a
Fishing and Shell Fish Center and even mentions South Jersey's
Cranberry and Grape Crops and how Perth Amboy plays into it!
This is PART 1 with more to come......

Perth Amboy Vintage Photos

I enjoy playing detective trying to figure out where and when a photo
in Perth Amboy was taken.
Today, I got in the mail a photo that I had won on E-Bay.
Was not sure if it was from Perth Amboy or Sewaren.
There was no writing on the back or a photographers stamp.
Just from looking at the picture, I could tell it was
JJ Kelly Cafe (bar)
Address was 434
The first thing I did was to scan the photo and make it into
a digital image.
I then used a program called GIMP to enlarge the photo.
Gimp is a great photo editor. It is free.
You can get it here:
I enlarged the photo to 200 percent and  was able to see some of the
little details in the picture.
No year, but found out it was the
Grand Opening of Sewaren Beach.
The next thing I found was a Street Sign.
Now I was almost certain it was Perth Amboy.
Took out my 1949 City Directory
and looked up the address.
It was 434 High St. at the corner of Washington St.
Now the only thing I had to find out was when
the picture was taken.

There were two partial Movie Signs in the Window.
One from the Ditmas and the other from the Crescent (Royal) .
I deduced the Wm..Fair was most likely William Fairbanks.
So I went to Google and searched his movies.
He did a movie called the "The Sheriff of Sundog" in 1922.
Also looked up 1922 movies and found a movie called
"Wasted Lives"
Now I knew where it was and when it was taken..
The last thing I did was go to Google Maps
and see if I could get a picture of what it looks like now.
I was able to copy the picture from Google Maps and
make it to a digital image.
2011 High Street and Washington St.

Start looking through your old Amboy photos and see
what you can discover.
