Perth Amboy Police Department

 

We are going to take a very quick look at the 2nd. largest Department in the government of the City of Perth Amboy, of course Perth Amboy School system was the largest Department. cops1

In 1948, the Police Department was made up of 1 Chief, 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 2 Detective Lieutenants, 4 Sergeants, 3 Detectives and 50 Patrolmen.

In 1960, the Police Department was consisted of 1 Chief, 3 Captains, 11 Lieutenants, 14 Sergeants, 3 Detectives and 55 Patrolmen.

Equipment in 1960 included 3 Radio Cars, 1 Detective Car, 1 Chauffeur’s car, 1 Patrol Wagon, 1 Emergency Truck, 1 Chief’s Car, 1 Police Launch (boat), 2 Motorcycles and 2 Motor Scooters. You have to remember that most of the town was patrol on foot, how many of you remember the foot patrols?

 Salaries in 1960 for Police Department Personnel:

Chief :         $7,200 - $8,600

Captains:    $5,400 – $6,800

Lieutenants:$4,900 – $6,300

Sergeants:  $4,700 – $6,100

Detectives:  $4,500 – $5,900

Patrolmen:   $4,300 – $5,700
